Aviation headset features
Apart from fit and comfort, there are several crucial elements to headset performance: active noise reduction, noise cancellation, and Bluetooth™ connectivity.
Active noise reduction: high-end aviation headsets have external microphones that sample ambient noise. Speakers within the earcup then generate a nearly-perfect counter-noise that cancels out ambient noise including engine noise, airstream sound, and the like. The BOSE A20 and Lightspeed Zulu.2 have the best active noise reduction capabilities available anywhere.
Noise cancellation: These aviation headsets employ dual microphones on the mic boom. The two microphones compare notes on ambient noise and simply don't transmit sounds detected by both the outward-facing and pilot-facing microphones. This means clearer transmissions and easier understanding from ATC and cockpit crew.
Bluetooth™: Several high-end aviation headsets allow Bluetooth connectivity from your cell phone, iPad or other device in the cockpit. This replaces the more traditional cable connecting to your auxiliary device — less clutter in the cockpit!
