Product description: Garmin 796 Aviation Touchscreen Portable Navigator with 3D Vision and XM Satellite Weather

Garmin aera® 796 Aviation Touchscreen Portable Navigator with 3D Vision

Like its predecessor, the GPSMAP 696, the Garmin 796 is an all-in-one portable aviation multi-function device. But thanks in large part to the iPad, the new aera 796 brings tablet-like features to a unit that includes a bright pinch-zoom screen that shows in both portrait or landscape modes and innovative "3D Vision" that provides an in-trail view of your airplane in color-coded, database-derived surroundings.

"Having used both for cockpit use, I strongly prefer the 796 because it's of a piece, not compromised by requiring third-part hardware to get weather, do GPS navigation or listen to XM radio. It's also not slightly too large nor too glary nor hobbled by occasionally buggy apps."
— AVweb, when comparing the Garmin aera 796 to the iPad.

The aera 796 also takes the pilot one step closer to a paperless cockpit with a digital document viewer, scratch pad and pre-loaded geo-referenced AeroNav IFR and VFR enroute charts.

What is 3D Vision?
Similar to synthetic vision, 3D vision is a unique 3D view of the surroundings outside the aircraft. It uses a GPS position and the terrain-alerting database to recreate a behind-the-aircraft perspective view of the topographic landscape — a feature previously only available in Garmin's panel-mount avionics. The resulting virtual reality display offers pilots a supplemental 3D depiction of land and water features including terrain, obstacles, runways and airport signposts all shown in relative proximity to the aircraft. By simply sliding your finger across the touchscreen enables the 3D view to be rotated around the aircraft to easily view the surrounding terrain.

Using its forward-looking terrain avoidance capability, Garmin 796 predicts in advance where towers or obstacles may exist and shades the landscape with amber or red overlays to indicate those areas. 3D Vision and other flight data are presented smoothly and continuously thanks to its internal GPS that provides position updates 5 times per second (5 Hz).

Does the Garmin 796 screen get washed out in sunlight?
The aera 796 screen is a bright 7" diagonal high-definition sunlight-readable display that makes detailed mapping easy to see in any lighting conditions and works in both portrait and landscape mode.

Will the Garmin 796 make my cockpit paperless?
The Garmin 796 qualifies for the following Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) classes:

  • Class 1 — Standard commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment such as laptops or handheld electronic devices. These devices are used as loose equipment and are typically stowed during critical phases of flight. A Class 1 EFB is considered a Portable Electronic Device (PED). Class 1 EFBs may be used to display Type B applications in critical phases of flight provided that they are 'secured and viewable'.
  • Class 2 — Also Portable Electronic Devices, and range from modified COTS equipment to purpose-built devices. Mounting, power (aircraft's power as primary) or data connectivity of an EFB typically requires the application of an STC, Type Certificate or Amended Type Certificate. (ref: FAA Order 8900.1)

Pilots can view their aircraft's position overlayed on a georeferenced VFR or IFR charts. Much like traditional enroute charts, when the 796 is in IFR mode it can display:

  • Victor Airways
  • Jet Routes
  • Minimum Enroute Altitudes
  • Leg Distance

U.S. approach charts and airport diagrams are available via Garmin FlightCharts. But if you are a pilot who has grown accustomed to Jeppesen charts, Garmin's ChartView service will provide access to Jeppesen's charting capabilities.

How does the Garmin 796 enhance situational awareness?
As stated above, the aera 796's 3D Vision shows terrain contours, but the built-in terrain and obstacle database also allows for:

  • Top-down view of your entire route
  • SafeTaxi® — Detailed taxiway diagrams and position information for many U.S., European or Canadian airports.
  • Private airport and heliport database that greatly expands your emergency "nearest" options.
  • AOPA Airport Directory Data — FBO, ground transportation, lodging and other facility information for most U.S. airports.
  • AC-U-KWIK — Airport directory data international pilots may choose as an option.

Does the Garmin 796 display weather?
Like many other Garmin portable devices, the aera 796 also includes a GXM™ 40 receiver for XM WX Satellite Weather and SiriusXM Radio. XM WX Satellite Weather provides:

  • Next Generation Radar (NEXRAD)
  • Aviation Routine Weather Reports (METARs)
  • Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts (TAFs)
  • Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs)
  • Lightning, winds aloft, turbulence forecasts, PIREPs, icing forecast and several other important weather products.
  • Weather data may be laid directly over the unit's navigation and topographic map databases.

Since the GXM 40 receiver is powered through the 796, the set up is simple, and satellite weather and radio can continue to operate for up to four hours or more without external power.

Please note: XM WX subscription data and coverage area information is available from XM WX Satellite Weather.

What does the Garmin 796 come with?

"Easy to use and powerful"
2/29/2012 by David in Texas

The Touch screen menu is very intuitive. Bright screen is beautiful. Integration of data sources such as WX, AOPA, freq, airspace, etc... Is very well done. A big improvement over 696, which I owned as well. However... A tad expensive. As always Garmin´s web site is confusing and makes buying subscriptions difficult and syncing is not intuitive. The documentation is incomplete on how to sync. They direct you to a url but that just gets you started. If you want to use XM for weather, you can´t connect the antenna directly to the unit. You have to use the mount system cables (home or yoke mount). Also, the yoke mount works for c172 style yokes but is not designed for C162, Cirrus, C400, or other stick yokes. I am sure there must be such a mount but I haven´t seen one to buy yet. I wish XM antenna was integrated and not a separate device. Too many cords and cables in the cockpit.

"Great Product"
2/2/2012 by Del in Texas

I have been very happy with this unit. Navigating around it is easy and intuitive. You won´t ever need the manual. Screen is readable in sunlight. I was using an iPad in the cockpit prior to this, but only use it now to view approach plates. The 796 beats the iPad hands down as far as ease of use. Weather is fast with lots of choices. I´m cancelling my weather subscription on my MX20 because I like the weather on the 796 so much better. Highly recommended as a backup to a panel mounted GPS and also quite functional as a primary multi function display.

"Glitches and Bugs but still OK"
12/30/2011 by Bruce in California

With the System 2.5 update I can now highly recommend the purchase of this GPS. Two minor software problems still persist, but they are insignificant compared to the improvements made to this product. A Climb Gradient data field has been added to the list of data fields along with a significant improvement to the 3D Vision Page, the addition of a VNAV glidepath window and a VSI tape with a carrot showing VS necessary to track that glidepath. "Field of view" lines have also been added to the split screen 3D Vision Page like the G1000 has. While the 796 still can´t measure distance between two points like the 696 can, the additional features give it more useful functionality than the 696, and I wouldn´t want to fly now without it.

"Unusable"
12/6/2011 by Jake in Illinois

I use a MacBook Pro. As soon as I updated the database on the Aera 796, the aviation database was wiped out. After numerous e-mails to Garmin, I was directed to call them. When I did, I was told that the Aera 796 software did not talk to the Mac and was directed to find a PC to update the software. I did, but the software update was not successful. I still have no aviation data and the Garmin Web Updater still won´t talk to my Aera. So far, I have been unable to use this device and I have had it for nearly a month. It is headed back to Garmin. I have to admit that I am disappointed. I was really looking forward to this product. It is a shame it did not live up to expectations. UPDATE: I was able to reset the Aera 796 and using my MacBook Pro (not a PC), was able to update the operating system. Once that was done, the update to the database was done and everything appears to be working as advertised. I´m keeping the unit for now, but have concerns about the reliability.

"Evolving Unit"
11/8/2011 by Robert in Georgia

I was quite excited about this product when I was first introduced to it. However, after using it on several flights I do not consider it reliable in its current state. I have had numerous "lock-ups" where the software stops responding and appears to be in some sort of loop. This has occurred more frequently when trying to access the weather products and then return to navigation. Occasionally the keyboard seems to lose its calibration which makes it impossible to continue its use. The only resolution to the problems has been to power off and then back on. This disrupts the weather updates, and they are not available until the normal update sequences are re-established. All of this makes it highly suspect during a critical aspect of flight such as an instrument approach. The potential of this product is very high, but I am waiting for an update to the software that will correct some of these issues. The unit already required an initial software update that corrected issues from the factory installed software. 11-9-11 After contacting Garmin support I received an email directing me to the process for installing the latest update. I was familiar with the process, but I did not know there were additional updates available. There have been notable enhancements in addition to the bug fixes with this latest update. The unit is evolving to the level I have come to expect from Garmin, and I also think it will make five star status within a reasonable time. Used on several flights, and it is extremely useful with situational awareness.
